Stephen King fans have many adaptations to choose from, as the horror author's novels have been adapted many times. One of the early ones will be available to watch on a new streaming home, alongside its sequel.
Starting Nov. 1, 1989's Pet Sematary and its sequel, 1992's Pet Sematary Two, will be heading to Paramount+. Directed by Mary Lambert, the 1989 adaptation of the 1983 novel of the same name, and one of the first adaptations of his novels. The film was successful at the box office, grossing $57.5 million on a budget of $11.5 million, leading to a sequel three years later.
Praised by critics and audiences upon its original release on Hulu, the acclaimed series is now set to start streaming for free.
Pet Sematary follows the Creed family, who move from Chicago to the rural town of Ludlow, Main, with their pet cat, Church. There, the family befriends their neighbor, Jud, who takes them to an isolated pet cemetery, which is misspelled "sematary" in the forest behind the Creed's new home. After Church is killed in an accident, Jud takes the cat to the cemetery, and the next day, a reanimated Church returns to the house.
The first film starred Dale Midkiff, Denise Crosby, Blaze Berdahl, Fred Gwynne, and Miko Hughes. Stephen King also made a cameo as the minister. The sequel, which took place a few years after the events of the 1989 horror, follows a different family, and it stars Edward Furlong, Anthony Edwards, and Clancy Brown. Lambert returned to direct the sequel.
1989's Pet Sematary had a mixed reception and currently holds a rating of 58% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, enough to grant it a "rotten" score. However, the audience enjoyed the film, which has a 60% approval score on the Popcornmeter. Its box office run also proves the film was a commercial success, making five times its budget.
The sequel wasn't a hit with the critics. Pet Sematary II holds a score of 21% from the critics, and 31% from the audience on the Popcornmeter. It ended its run with only $17 million at the box office, which was still encouraging as it managed to win back its $8 million budget twice.
In 2019, Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer tackled a new Pet Sematary adaptation, with a screenplay by Jeff Buhler. It followed the same story from the original novel, with the Creed family at its core. It starred Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow.
Mike Flanagan will executive produce and write a new TV adaptation of one of Stephen King's best books.
The new adaptation had been in the works for almost a decade. Frequent Stephen King screenwriter Matt Greenberg (1408, Mercy) was in talks to handle the script, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider set to produce. Paramount Pictures officially greenlit the film in 2017, and filming began in June 2018 and wrapped in August of the same year.
2019's Pet Sematary had a budget of $20 million and grossed over $113 million worldwide, despite its mixed reviews. The movie has a "rotten" score of 57% from the critics, and only 33% on the Popcornmeter, yet it was a commercial success. It also led to a prequel series called Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.
1989's Pet Sematary and 1992's Pet Sematary II will be available to stream on Nov. 1 on Paramount+.
