LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office say that bronze name plates have been stolen from Rolling Prairie and Union Mills cemeteries.

Rolling Prairie Cemetery is the home of where local LaPorte veterans rest in peace.

But lately, people have found that bronze name plates are being taken from the grave site.

“It’s heart wrenching, it’s so just disrespectful to the deceased, and to our veterans. It’s totally unacceptable to me,” said Beverley Mrozinski.

People in LaPorte County have noticed missing bronze name plates on tombstones at both Rolling Prairie and Union Mills Cemeteries, leaving loved ones of those resting there with more questions than answers.

Police are aware of recent thefts and have increased cemetery patrols.

“I think it’s very important, we have some brave individuals who are going into a cemetery and not only are they desecrating a grave, but they are removing veterans’ markers off these headstones. And these are something that these veterans, deceased veterans have earned, for the service of their country,” said Sheriff Ron Heeg.

Police suspect this is happening at night.

Heeg is asking the community for assistance in stopping these thefts.

“Again, if you see something, say something. Call the sheriff's office. You can call us at (219) 326-7700 or if you see something immediately or illegal going on, please call 911,” said Sheriff Heeg.

Authorities say tampering with a grave site at Union Mills or Rolling Prairie is felony theft, which can lead to jail time.
